:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Syd Young -- Desperate Girl, Powerful Story : I've been interested in reading this book since hearing about it, and especially after racing through the Queen's Gambit last year. I wasn't sure how Saab would pull it off, but she did, and then she made me cry in her author's note (and I don't cry!). I just didn't realize something important about one of the characters, and it makes the book even that much more meaningful. So that is to say, Saab did her homework and more. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carla S. -- Heart-wrenching historical fiction : THE LAST CHECKMATE by Gabriella Saab is a beautifully-written and heart-wrenching story of a young girl working for the Polish underground resistance in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Fourteen-year-old Maria Florkowska is captured by the Gestapo while delivering documents for the resistance. After a brutal interrogation, Maria and her whole family are sent to Auschwitz, but only Maria survives the first day. She is saved by the sadistic camp deputy, Fritzsch, but only when he learns she can play chess and he can use her to entertain the camp guards. She knows he will kill her when he becomes bored with their matches. Guilt-ridden over the deaths of her family members, Maria only finds the will to live when she is befriended by a kind Catholic priest and the only other woman prisoner in the men’s camp. Facing unthinkable atrocities over her four years in prison, her only wish is to survive long enough to bring down her family’s killer. It all comes down to one final chess match. Can she bring the murderer to justice? Although the descriptions of the torturous conditions and the suffering and loss in the camps was very difficult to read, this is ultimately a story of courage, perseverance, friendship and love. I really appreciated the extensive Author’s Notes, details of the real historical figures and the miscellaneous facts the author shared at the end. It made it very clear where she took fictional liberties. Be sure to read these sections, but not before reading the book. I enjoyed this compelling and moving story and highly recommend it. Marshall -- A gripping story of Auschwitz and its lasting effect on its inmates. : The Last Checkmate by Gabriella Saab is the story of Maria and her friends, mostly prisoners at Auschwitz. Early in the war, Maria and her mother were resistance workers in Warsaw. Her mother helped get Jewish youngsters to safety. One day she was caught. They also went after her family. She successfully lied her way, she thought, even after the torture. As a closing, the questioner installed fie cigarette burns into her arm. One of each member of her family, she thought, but at least they'd be free. She was wrong. Shortly after she was returned to their cell, they were put on a truck and then a train, which would carry them to their deaths. As they left the train, Maria got separated from the rest of them. At the same time she became the toy of a sadistic guard, who discovered she like chess and kept her playing for many of the years she was in the camp. She made friends, some of whom lived, and she lived to see the camp liberated, although she was not longer there, but nearby. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
